How do I become a Beta Tester and download SFMB?

Note: If you are not already in the beta server, new Beta Testers are admitted through public recruitment or direct scouting. The steps below apply after you have been invited to the server.

Read the [[sfmb_betatest_community_rules/#for-newbies]]{Community Rules — For newbies}. It explains the quiz, Beta Tester promotion, account approval, and how SFMB-Bot privately sends MarioDownloader to you.

Why does Discord need to be open?

SFMB uses the Discord desktop app to identify your Discord account and verify its beta access when you log in. Discord must be running and signed in with the account linked to SFMB.

Does SFMB use a separate password?

No. SFMB authenticates the Discord account linked to your game account. If you lose access to that Discord account, contact the developer to have another Discord account linked.

Can I install SFMB on multiple computers?

Yes. However, the same account cannot run SFMB on multiple computers at the same time. Starting another session invalidates the session already running on the other computer.

Can I play SFMB on Linux?

Windows is the officially supported and tested platform. SFMB may run under Wine, but this is an unofficial, unsupported, and untested setup. The developer cannot take responsibility for problems specific to Wine.

Why won't SFMB start or log in after restarting my computer?

Make sure the Discord desktop app is open and signed in with the correct beta tester account before starting SFMB. See [[sfmb_getting_started/#launch-and-sign-in]]{Getting Started — Launch and Sign In} for the full checklist.

Why doesn't the game update?

SFMB checks for updates only after login succeeds. If the account is correct but the game cannot connect, check whether a firewall, your current network, or your Internet service provider is blocking access to the SFMB server.

What should I do if an SFMB file is deleted or damaged?

Use the force-update methods described in [[sfmb_getting_started/#updates-and-file-recovery]]{Getting Started — Updates and File Recovery}. If Mario.exe itself is missing, run the MarioDownloader that SFMB-Bot sent you.

How do I change the controls or other settings?

Run MarioConfig.exe. It includes keyboard, controller, volume, window size, and display settings. See [[sfmb_getting_started/#configure-the-game]]{Getting Started — Configure the Game}.

Why doesn't collecting coins in a stage increase my NeoCoin balance?

Coins collected inside a stage are separate from NeoCoin. NeoCoin is earned by playing and creating stages. See the [[sfmb_exp_and_coin_table]]{EXP & Coin Table} for details.
